The Beauty of Loi Krathong

The Beauty of Loi Krathong

I rarely go night out in Chiang Mai, but yesterday as the EarthRights School sent the students to the city, we went to Loi Krathong Festival. Before we went there, we had to do some preparations such as the students creating their own Loi Krathong. At first, I had no idea about how to make it, but we learnt from the staffs who already experienced about the festival at school.

I want to talk a bit about the festival of Loi Krathong. Loi means releasing and Krathong means a banana truck which is decorated with flowers and leaves to float it in the water. Traditionally, people use banana leaves and colourful flowers to decorate Loi Krathong and they also put one candle and incense sticks in it and then they release it into the river or pond or canal. This festival is usually celebrated at the end of year of Thai calendar which is usually in the month of November. The reason is that they want to release all the bad memories of the past year and will start the next year with all good lucks.

We did the same thing when we went to the festival. We floated the Loi Krathong to the Ping River and then we took photos of it. What makes me interesting is most people around the place of the festival are foreigners releasing Loi Krathong as well as taking photos of it as I observed. It reminds me that even though we come from different countries and different parts of the word, we can show our love, compassion, tolerance and kindness to the others people by taking part in their cultural and traditional festivals. So this is the beauty inside Loi Krathong despite it is a traditionally Thai festival.
